Steelers GM Omar Khan open to Aaron Rodgers staying in Pittsburgh longer than one year: 'He's a young 41'

Aaron Rodgers is 41 years old. He's entering his 21st NFL season. The four-time league MVP said on "The Pat McAfee Show" last month that he's "pretty sure" 2025 will also be his final season. At the time, Rodgers said he didn't ask Pittsburgh for more than one season, hence the one-year deal he signed ahead of Steelers minicamp.

But recently extended Steelers general manager Omar Khan said Friday on "The Rich Eisen Show" that he'd be open to Rodgers staying in Pittsburgh longer than just one season.

Eisen asked, "Do you envision any scenario in which this could be a longer stay in Pittsburgh, if [Rodgers is] so inclined?"

Khan replied: "Obviously, we have to see how the season goes, but absolutely. He's a young 41, and we're obviously taking it year-by-year, and that's where we're at.

"But we're obviously not closing the door on anything."

While earning 10 Pro Bowl nods and a Super Bowl ring, Rodgers spent the first 18 seasons of his Hall of Fame-caliber career with the Green Bay Packers, who drafted him No. 24 overall in 2005. It looked like he'd end his illustrious NFL playing days in New York, but his two-year stint with the Jets didn't go according to plan.

Rodgers tore his Achilles on the Jets' fourth snap of the 2023 season, which he then missed while recovering from the heartbreaking injury. Last season, he posted a 28:11 touchdown-to-interception ratio and threw for 3,897 yards while completing 63% of his passes. But his 90.5 passer rating was just below the 92.3 league average and far below his 102.6 career average. His 6.7 yards per attempt were the fewest he had averaged in a season since 2015.

His return and subsequent durability at his age last season were impressive. His team's record was not; the Jets finished 5-12 and didn't sniff the playoffs.

There was a long wait this offseason to see if Rodgers would come back for another NFL season, either with the Jets or with another franchise.

Eisen asked Khan how he remained so patient for Rodgers to make a decision.

"Somebody asked me about that the other day, and I can say we don't really view our patience as a weakness," Khan said Friday. "I view it as a strength. And we had some conversations, and we were engaged with him and just felt really good about our chances. And we went through the evaluation process early and felt like he was going to be the right guy for us if we could land the plane. ... He did a great job of communicating with us. I don't know what the narrative was out there."

That's when Eisen cut Khan off. Eisen asked for the fourth-year Steelers GM to clarify what he meant by Rodgers' "great job of communicating." Eisen asked if Rodgers was reaching out to the organization.

"It's just open dialogue," said Khan, who was working in the Steelers' football operations and player personnel department when they won two Super Bowls in the 2000s.

"We knew where he stood, what was going on with him. And he knew where we were, and it just felt really comfortable with the process."

Rodgers took what longtime Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin called a "productive" visit on March 28. At the spring owners meetings the next week, team president Art Rooney II was asked if Rodgers would sign with the team, and Rooney indicated Pittsburgh was on that trajectory.

In mid-April, though, Rodgers went on the "Pat McAfee Show" and mentioned that retirement could still be a possibility while noting that he wanted to focus on his personal life at that time.

The Steelers waited until the sixth round to draft a quarterback — Ohio State's Will Howard — and ultimately came to an agreement with Rodgers in June.

Rodgers is hard to read and has been for quite some time. Whether he plays beyond this year is anyone's guess. But Khan is open to the idea. He, of course, wants to see how this season goes first.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers bringing back original 1976 white road uniforms to celebrate franchise's 50th NFL season

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are bringing back an iconic look for their home opener during Week 3 against the New York Jets, the team announced Tuesday.

To celebrate the franchise's 50th NFL season, the Buccaneers will don their original 1976 uniform, featuring white jerseys, helmets and pants with orange and red stripes.

These uniforms were worn for just the Buccaneers' inaugural NFL season in 1976. The full orange Creamsicle design has been used multiple times since 2009, but this will be the first time these white uniforms will have been worn in 50 years.

The 2025 uniforms will have a special Creamsicle 50th season patch as well as "Hey! Hey! Tampa Bay!" stitched inside the jersey collar — a nod to the Buccaneers' 1979 fight song.

"The '76 Jersey represents a piece of Buccaneers history and serves as a tribute to the generations of fans and players who shaped this franchise," said Buccaneers chief operating officer Brian Ford in a statement. "As we launch into our 50th season, we're proud to reintroduce The '76 Jersey and the tradition it embodies. It is a reminder that every Buccaneers fan, from the originals to the newest generation, is part of an evolving story that started in 1976 and continues being written today."

Tampa started off well as a franchise in 1976 by drafting future Pro Football Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon with the first overall pick. Selmon joined a roster that saw Steve Spurrier start 12 games at quarterback. Louis Carter led the team in rushing with 521 yards, and Morris Owens and J.K. McKay were the top two receivers with over 300 receiving yards each.

While 1976 was memorable as the Buccaneers' first season, it was forgettable on the field. The team went 0-14 and was shut out five times. The winless start was the beginning of an 0-26 run over its first two years in the league.

From route cues to toilet flushing, Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf are getting to know each other quickly at Steelers camp

LATROBE, Pa. — DK Metcalf was setting up a PlayStation in his training camp dorm room on Tuesday when he heard the knock.

The Pittsburgh Steelers receiver headed to open his bedroom door, figuring he had his own quarters at the Steelers’ Saint Vincent College outpost. Instead, the bathroom door opened … and in walked Aaron Rodgers.

“He popped out of the corner,” Metcalf said.

The pair of Steelers’ star offseason acquisitions are eager to build chemistry and establish rapport. And head coach Mike Tomlin has given them another route to strengthen their communication: by sharing a bathroom for the next month.

Rodgers leaned into that communication early when he realized the flushing mechanism on their shared toilet was, well, not quiet.

“The toilet is super loud,” Metcalf told Yahoo Sports on Thursday. “So he was like, ‘Yeah, at night, if we got to piss, just don’t flush the toilet.’ I was like, ‘All right, bet.’”

The nightly urge indeed overcame Metcalf around 9:30 Wednesday night so the receiver texted his quarterback to ask: “You asleep yet?”

Rodgers confirmed he was awake.

“All right, bet,” Metcalf texted back, “I’m about to flush the toilet.”

And flush he did.

The Steelers hope that Rodgers and Metcalf’s rapport will grow not just in their daily routines but also into a consistent problem for defenses. Pittsburgh looks to Rodgers and Metcalf as part of the recipe to winning a playoff game for the first time in nine years and a Super Bowl for the first in 17.

Rodgers believes the bonding in the lunchroom and at snack time, in hot afternoon practices and meetings, are key to taking them all the way.

“Most of the 32 teams would probably say something to that accord at this time of the year, but I think there’s really only six to eight that have a legitimate chance,” Rodgers said. “Sometimes it’s 10 to 12, and there’s teams that surprise you.

“I would say on paper, we’re probably one of those 10 to 12.”

Even on interception, Rodgers and Metcalf learning

During the first throw of team drills in Wednesday’s inaugural practice, the Steelers' defense looked more ready to jump off paper than its offense.

Metcalf lined up to Rodgers’ left alongside running back Jaylen Warren, raising the antennae of linebacker Patrick Queen. But Rodgers wanted to test Metcalf one-on-one on the hitch against a Cover 3 defense. So the quarterback threw it — and Queen intercepted it.

Steelers defenders and fans erupted, a splash play landing earlier in camp practice than perhaps expected.

Rodgers, entering Year 21, wasn’t fazed.

“It’s good to get that out of the way,” he said. “Anybody that’s watched me practice over the years, you like to try certain throws at certain times. And anybody that’s watched me in games knows I’ve been pretty stellar taking care of the football over the years.

“I’m going to try to fit certain things in. You got to deal with some sweat on the ball from time to time, so it’s going to be a good challenge.

“I’m going to throw some picks. But I’m going to throw some touchdowns, too.”

During his NFL career, Rodgers hasn’t just thrown some touchdowns, but a full 503 regular-season touchdowns and 45 more in the playoffs.

Rodgers joined the Steelers this offseason, a true free agent for the first time, boasting four MVPs to his name and a Super Bowl title. He’s advanced to the postseason 12 times since the Packers drafted him in 2005, and he’s won a playoff game in seven different years.

That breadth and depth of knowledge showed in the Steelers’ first walkthrough, when the veteran quarterback was already diagnosing Pittsburgh’s defensive looks despite not officially reaching a deal with the club until June 5.

“He was like, ‘Oh, they’re going to rotate down this. We’re going to rotate down there,’” safety DeShon Elliott told Yahoo Sports. “We’re just like, ‘All right, bro. Whatever. Bet. You know our defense, f*** it.’

“He’s seen so much football.”

What Rodgers has seen has not sent him into autopilot nor bred complacency, coaches and teammates say. Elliott said Rodgers scans safeties longer presnap than any quarterback he’s faced in seven years, while rookie quarterback Will Howard says Rodgers questions just about every element of meetings to ensure he understands a play’s intent.

Why audible to this play rather than that? Why not change the quarterback’s footwork on this run scheme, and open up like that on a jet motion?

“Just constantly as we're going through the install, ‘Hey, on this one, why are we canning this one to this?’” Howard told Yahoo Sports. “Constantly inquisitive and it's not necessarily a shot at anyone, it's not an ego thing at all with him. He's just curious.

“He just genuinely wants to know.”

That excites offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who began tailoring elements of his offense to Rodgers in mid-March, conversing with the quarterback multiple times before Rodgers officially signed in June after organizing matters in his personal life.

Smith sees a quarterback with plenty left in the tank at age 41, in mind and in body.

“He’s not a rigid thinker and neither am I so, that makes it easier when you’re having those conversations [on] how you want to adapt,” Smith told Yahoo Sports. “When you watch him at the end of last year when he got healthy, he still throws the football [well].

“He still moves around pretty good.”
